Patient to Ambassador

Joining the Setting Scoliosis Straight Ambassador Team

More than sixty years have passed since I was diagnosed with scoliosis and fitted with a Milwaukee brace. At the time, I could never have imagined that a childhood challenge would become a lifelong journey and eventually lead me to advocacy. Today, I am honored to serve as a member of the Setting Scoliosis Straight Ambassador Team.

Living with scoliosis shaped many aspects of my life. There were physical challenges, emotional struggles, and moments when I felt different from those around me. Yet those experiences also taught me resilience, perseverance, and compassion. Over time, I came to understand that adversity can become a source of strength and purpose.

Throughout the years, I have been inspired by others whose experiences mirrored my own. One of those gifts was receiving a signed copy of The Gift of Scoliosis by Debra Ordes and orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Anthony P. Moreno. Their work, which chronicles Debra's journey with scoliosis and her commitment to helping others, reminded me that our stories have the power to encourage and uplift.

Today, that journey has entered a new chapter. As a Setting Scoliosis Straight Ambassador, I have joined individuals across the country who are dedicated to raising awareness, supporting research, promoting early detection, and advocating for children and families affected by scoliosis and other spinal deformities. I am proud to add my voice to this important effort.

The images on this page represent more than medical records and memories. They tell the story of a young girl wearing a Milwaukee brace, the support I received from others who understood the journey, and the privilege of becoming an ambassador committed to helping future generations.

Why Awareness Matters

Scoliosis affects millions of people around the world. Early detection and proper treatment can make a profound difference in the lives of children and adolescents. Families facing a new diagnosis often experience fear and uncertainty, which is why education and awareness are so important.

Although June is recognized as Scoliosis Awareness Month, the need for education and advocacy continues throughout the year. Every conversation matters. Every shared experience has the potential to offer hope and encouragement to someone facing the same challenges.

As an ambassador, I hope to help raise awareness within my community and support the ongoing efforts of Setting Scoliosis Straight to improve the lives of children and families affected by spinal deformities.

Bent, Not Broken

Looking back, I never would have imagined that the young girl wearing a Milwaukee brace would one day become a Scoliosis Ambassador. Life has a way of transforming our struggles into opportunities to help others.

Scoliosis changed the shape of my spine, but it never changed the person I was meant to become. Along the way, I discovered strength, compassion, and a deeper appreciation for the people who offered encouragement and understanding.

My journey has taught me that challenges do not have to define us. Instead, they can become a source of purpose. I remain grateful for the path that brought me here and for the opportunity to support others who are beginning journeys of their own.

My spine may be curved, but my spirit has never been broken.

From patient to ambassador, the journey continues.
